An established firm favourite in the St James’s calendar, this year’s Christmas Gala Concert lived up to its reputation as a hallmark event to launch the Christmas season. We were joined this year by The Sixteen under the direction of Harry Christophers, who gave breathtaking performances across the evening, accompanied by the St James’s Chamber Orchestra. Each year, we commission a new choral work, made possible by the support of The Order of the Fleur de Lys. With worlds by Charlotte Baginski and music by Kerensa Briggs, The World Sings: Love, was given its world premier at the Gala, once again adding to the library of the St James’s Songbook.
A second world premier was performed entitled Imagine the World to be Different, with words by our Associate Rector, Reverend Doctor Ayla Lepine and music by the composer Will Todd. The song was commissioned to mark our presence as the first church to be invited to exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show this year. Our Garden was given the same title and won Gold, so we were thrilled Sophie Raworth, who had broadcast from our garden in the summer, joined us as a our host for the concert, guiding us through every moment across the programme.
We were also joined by good friends of St James’s, the actors Rhoda Ofori-Attah, and Simon Callow CBE, providing that extra sparkle to a glittering programme, with something for everyone. Adam Haus, from the London Park School on Piccadilly, won this years poem competition, with Let US Imagine, brining together the various aspects of this years Christmas for All Gala Concert.
We are always grateful for the support our local neighbours give, and this year our Gala was made possible by Charles Myers of Signum Global Partners and Mrs Inna Meggs of HSBC. And of course, we are grateful to everyone who supports our Christmas for All appeal, and when reading this you feel you can help support our work, please do so here.
It is our hope that you will consider joining us for the 2025 Christmas for All Gala, which will take place on the 4th December, when we will come together, joined once more by The Sixteen, The St James’s Chamber Orchestra, Genesis Sixteen, a surprise international soloist, celebrity friends, brought together by Sophie Raworth BBC, as we continue to ‘Repeat the Sounding Joy’ and commence he season in style.
