Sustainability can be described as the meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. At St James’s Piccadilly, this is rooted in our commitment to faith, earth and social justice.
We are living through an unprecedented climate and ecological emergency, with impacts that are deepening with every passing day. Climate change and ecological breakdown are unjust, affecting communities unequally and contributing to accelerating rates of extinction among other species.
St James’s has decades of theological reflection and community engagement in environmental and social justice, and we recognise our responsibility and capacity to exercise meaningful leadership in response.
We have developed a Net Zero Plan and are working towards reaching net zero carbon by 2030. As a busy, 7 day a week church, our current emissions are approximately 20-30 tonnes of CO₂e annually from energy use alone, and significantly more when including goods and services, food, transport and other activities.
Staff and members of our community are engaging in Carbon Literacy training, and a Sustainability Group brings together staff and congregation to support and guide action across church life.
The Wren Project presents an important opportunity to help us achieve net zero while also exploring how we can live differently within the limits of the Earth’s finite systems. Our focus is on practical action, community engagement and theological reflection, working together to reduce our environmental impact and live more sustainably.
Robert Myers, St James’s Chelsea Show Garden designer, explains how prioritising sustainability throughout the projects lifecycle sets a new standard for ecologically-driven practices.
