On Pride Day in London, St James’s Church, Piccadilly opens its doors to everyone, transforming into a vibrant space of celebration, reflection, and shared belonging.
A Pride at St James’s is a short documentary observing the Church of England parish of St James’s Piccadilly as it hosts its annual Pride celebration. On this day, the church becomes both sanctuary and gathering place, where celebration and theological reflection sit side by side.
Through moments of joy, conversation, and community, the film captures a collective effort to create an open, inclusive space rooted in care and welcome. Featuring Revd Lucy Winkett, Revd Dr Mariama Ifode-Blease, Verger Toks Mumuney, and members of the Pride of St James’s group, the film presents a woman-led church actively shaping a Christianity grounded in compassion, inclusion, and belonging.
When producer Ken Pratt first told me about St James’s annual Pride celebration, I was intrigued. As an atheist baptised into the Irish Catholic Church, I was drawn to explore where ideas of “pride” and “Pride” meet within a Church of England community.
This film began as an inquiry and became a portrait of shared presence. On the day of filming, the openness, care, and ease of inclusion were immediately apparent. Clergy, staff, and congregation spoke with clarity and generosity about why Pride—and pride—matter in building spaces of love, intention, and belonging.
Rather than seeking contradiction, the film holds attention on how faith and celebration can coexist, and how community is actively made in real time.
