This week we highlight the creativity of Black British composers, whose work spans centuries and styles. From the remarkable 18th-century figure Ignatius Sancho – the first known Black Briton to publish music, to Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, whose choral and orchestral works were celebrated across Europe and America, through to modern voices like Errollyn Wallen, Shirley J. Thompson, and Laura Mvula, these musicians show the breadth of Black contribution to Britain’s musical heritage. Their compositions range from art songs and choral pieces to jazz and contemporary classical music and even military style-marches, reminding us that the story of British music is richer and more diverse than is often acknowledged.
