“The Wren Project helps us tell the story of who we are and who we are becoming.” Lucy Winkett, Rector of St James’s Piccadilly
A Wren masterpiece
Christopher Wren designed St James’s Piccadilly in the 17th century. Since then the church has been a place of worship, refuge, music and social action in the heart of London.
Why restoration is needed
Like many historic buildings, the church now faces significant structural and conservation challenges.
The future vision
The Wren Project will protect the building while strengthening its mission as a place for:
In this blog the Revd Lucy Winkett tells a compelling story of renewal, community, and the powerful connection between past and future. It explores how the transformation of St James’s Church is not just an architectural restoration, but a deeply human project shaped by the stories, memories, and contributions of countless individuals across generations. At its heart, the piece highlights themes of inclusivity, accessibility, and hope—showing how historic spaces can be reimagined to better serve modern communities, from social outreach to environmental action.
St James’s believes in the transformative vision that is the Wren Project because it is bigger than us. It speaks to a higher purpose. It speaks to justice, beauty, equity, and liberation. The Wren Project is a restoration of the whole site, the sanctuary, the courtyard and gardens and the Piccadilly building that supports our community social outreach work. The Project holds true to the roots of our baptismal call, lived out by William Blake and Quobna Ottobah Cuguano, that we are made for more. St James’s Church Piccadilly, in the beating heart of London, has made itself a community that is proud of its creative openheartedness where everyone has a place to belong. We are excited to be on this journey and encourage everyone who we encounter to join us in bringing more light, more joy, and more hope, to the people, communities and society we serve.
The project is being delivered in carefully planned stages, working with conservation specialists, architects and partners to ensure the highest standards of care.
Be part of this inspiring vision, not just for the church but for the society we serve. Every single pound counts. We know that not everyone will be able to make large donations so we encourage you to give whatever you can.
