Losing Identity, Maria De Vido

Church Window Mask

Tuesday 1 September – end of October

Losing Identity explores the silent grief and resilience of women fleeing Ethiopia and Eritrea across the Mediterranean Sea in unsafe, overcrowded boats.

  • Free – access during all church opening hours.

  • The red silhouettes represent lives shaped by courage, sacrifice, and loss, while their faceless forms reflect identities slowly erased by displacement. Against a deep blue background, the sea becomes both a pathway to hope and a witness to suffering. This artwork invites viewers to remember that every silhouette carries a story, a home, and an enduring search for dignity, belonging, freedom, despite impossible odds and unimaginable journeys of survival, memory, hope, love, beyond every border crossed alone.
