‘Beating the bounds’ is an ancient rogation tradition in which parishioners process around the boundary of the parish, reciting a litany of the saints, and praying for its protection.
40 people set out to beat the bounds last Sunday. There were many highlights as we walked and reflected on borders, belonging and kinship – we acknowledged the river Tyburn flowing underground close by, saluted Ottobah Cugoano’s blue plaque on Pall Mall, considered the many intersections of life in this unique area, and walked through the Stafford Hotel which lies right on the parish boundary.
