Background Shape

There are a huge range of ways to participate in the life of St James’s, including being a welcomer, reader, Sunday Breakfast volunteer, host at FEAST and much more.
There’s something for everyone. Come and be a part of our story and presence in central London.

Sunday Welcomers

Roll out the red carpet for our congregation by greeting them when they arrive and serving tea & coffee after the service. Email the Churchwardens for more information.

Lay Singers

Join members of our community as they lead all the congregational singing in our Sunday Eucharist and often sing a choral piece during Communion.

The music covers a wide range of eras and styles including contemporary classical, classical, Soul, jazz, plainchant and Taizé. Email Michael Haslam, Director of Music, for more information.

Be part of the servers’ team. Supported by the clergy, servers are part of the liturgy team on Sunday mornings. They carry the cross and candles in the procession, assist in sharing the Eucharist with the congregation, and ensure that the Sunday services at St James’s are done with care and beauty. If you’d like to join the team, email Ayla, Associate Rector.

Godly Play

Care to listen and wonder about stories and life? Are you open to the way children see and experience? …become a little child that will enter the Kingdom of Heaven: Whose meaning is “deeper far than generally believed.” (Traherne). Join our team to offer a monthly Godly Play Service for children at St James’s; email David for more details.

Cook for and offer hospitality to our special guests. On Monday evenings we provide a 2-course sit-down meal in the church for around 35 people who are experiencing homelessness or on low income. The food, donated by City Harvest, is freshly prepared and served by volunteers who cook and host the meal. To volunteer, email Robin, the Food Outreach Coordinator.

Sunday Breakfast

Volunteers cook and serve hot takeaway breakfasts and drinks for c.70 people in our courtyard every Sunday morning. To volunteer, email Robin, the Food Outreach Coordinator.

PCC Members & Church Wardens

Stand for election and be a representative of our community within and beyond St James’s. We hold annual elections for Church Wardens and PCC members. Find out more and read short bios of all our current representatives on our Governance page.

You can read short bios of all our current representatives on our Who’s Who pages.

Volunteer Groups

At St James’s people offer their time and talents for all kinds of groups. Getting involved with any of these groups, at any level, is a great way to meet people and try things out. In addition to the highlights listed below, opportunities include our Traidcraft stall, earth justice projects, Walking Boots (country walks, both shorter and longer distances), intercessors (those who offer prayers in services) and readers for Sunday services, Holding the Silence (a short service during the day on YouTube that can be prayed anytime), as well as creative and arts events throughout the year. If you’d like more information. If you’d like more information, email Ayla Lepine the Associate Rector for details.

Your participation in any of these community activities will make such a difference and contribute to the local area, London and beyond.

There’s something for everyone.
