After compline, some people leave straight away, while others remain online for a brief chat.
Since the early days of the Christian church, Compline has been the prayer at the end of the day.
A group of us have met every night since the Covid-19 lockdowns began in 2020, and people continue to value this. The Compline Group has grown into an enduring part of St James’s, and a source of other satellite projects such as Gospels Aloud (when we read our way through the entire Gospels) or our Prayer & Fasting Day in support of our Triumph of Delights festival in the run-up to COP26.
At the start of each session, we allocate the readings among those who want to participate actively, but it is also possible to attend without reading or singing. Spaces for silence and individual prayers are always present.
