"Everyone, from all communities, needs to embrace Black History Month as a starting point for exploring, discovering and celebrating Black history, heritage and culture – both past and contemporary. From the incredible achievements and contributions, to the many untold stories and barriers to progress – the day-to-day reality of institutionalised racism."

A huge range of events are taking place around the world for Black History Month this October. Each week we'll be recommending something you may wish to explore - and you can find full listings for all the UK events at www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk
This week, we encourage you to discover the work of visual activist Zanele Muholi. Born in South Africa, Muholi came to prominence in the early 2000s with photographs that sought to envision black lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and intersex lives. Muholi’s work challenges hetero-patriarchal ideologies and representations, presenting the participants in their photographs as confident and beautiful individuals bravely existing in the face of prejudice, intolerance and, frequently, violence. Later this year, Tate Modern will present their first major retrospective in the UK. In the meantime, there are three short videos for you to watch on this page. | |
