Holding on to the Silence: St James's daily prayer material
At St James's we are part of an extraordinary, gathered community from across London and beyond. Our geographical dispersion presents many challenges in coming together and building community not least because of the difficulty many have in getting to the church during the week.
In Lent we were aware that it's all too easy for us to get caught up in the business of doing and busy-ness, with less time for stillness. This awareness reminds us of the importance of praying together and of making a priority of reconnecting with and listening to, the 'still small voice within'. So we launched Holding the Silence – a simple daily office with an invitation for everyone to join in during the week, as and when they could. The office could be said at any one of four times during the day - 8.30am, 12 noon, 5.45pm and 9.00pm. The idea is that by joining in praying the office at any of those times on any day, you would not be praying alone, but would be united with others in the community, and the wider Christian community.
After the project ended, there were requests for it to continue - hence the new name of Holding on to the Silence.
We gather once a month for a time of shared silence and the opportunity to share thoughts and reflections on our life together and experiences of sharing the office in this way. We meet following the 11am Eucharist (usually around 1pm) on the first Sunday of the month.
