How to give money to St James's Church
St James's Church wants to be a strong, vibrant voice for God's inclusive love, building and sustaining a just and open-hearted Christian community in the middle of the city. This work continues and flourishes online for the time being. But St James's Church is also a building that is normally open 7 days a week, as a peaceful, welcoming place for all during the week. The church supports a large number of people's livelihoods and is a place of work, trade, music and discussion for thousands of people of all faiths and none, who find here, even if they are not part of the Sunday congregation, a place that enhances their lives, brings them spiritual sustenance and comfort and is a place they can find and be found by, their God. It is this day-to-day vibrant community activity that also brings in the majority of our income. The truth is that over 90% of our income disappeared overnight last week with the closure of the market in the courtyard, the closure of the church building, cessation of services and the stopping of the concerts and events programme.
St James's has a dedicated and close-knit staff team. We have had to furlough, cut hours, change contracts and limit work for all our staff, who are facing a very uncertain future, as are many of you, at the moment.
We fully recognise that this is an extremely challenging time for many people, and if you are not able to contribute financially, of course this is totally understood. It is you as a human being that we value and celebrate above all else, whoever you are and whatever your own circumstances.
Ordinarily, it costs £2,900 per day to keep the church open each day, welcoming, lively and active. We are now living off our reserves for the foreseeable future. Our financial planning has assumed that we will be with virtually no income for at least 6-8 months, expecting that when we do open, our income will not return quickly necessarily. Our monthly planned givers give anything from £10 a month to £500 a month. Whatever you are able to give, please consider this over this period.
